ended up opening a case with MS. Proved to them it was all configured properly by running a trace, preparing and replaying it in this configuration.
They ran some procmon...

for good measure and to make sure im not losing my mind, I ran a new trace this morning. capped it at 1gb. preprocessed it and it is replaying now...

it processes via an ssis task that I am admittedly not intimately familiar with.

another note, we are seeing memory starvation on the OS at the time of it processing.

This is a 2014SP1 x64 enterprise server. SSRS Memory setting are left with default values...

The AppDomain Unload messages in the SSRS Log happen on a pretty steady 12 hour cycle as per the 720 minute default detailed here:

one other point, even our simple 'test' reports that retreive the simplest top result from a lookup table are problematic in these 'slow' periods before an SSRS restart is performed,...

You could always restore a read-only copy of your database and let your users connect to that... then at least the two databases would be separate... if you ran...

REPLACE, DatePart/DateAdd, StatisticsIO/Time ON/Off, identity insert

most of these get used a good bit in preparing nonproduction test-databases/scrubbing production data, or perf analysis.
