how often you backup the databases?...if it is everyday at particular time (say 2 AM everyday), then did you get the error when you backed up databases at last time.

are you sure you uninstalled common componenets also of sql server 2005 instances.

can you check log files to see any unusual error under C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Setup Bootstrap\LOG\Files

can you try one more time. could be server was down at that time or service was re-started as other members mentioned..
