So if the transaction log backup ran the same time the database backup ran, then that would be create locks for sure?
That would explain what we were seeing.

I really think the bottle neck is I/O... In a week or two I will be connecting a new SANS device to that same machine, then the backup will...

Just to confirm, the backup run by the backup and maintance plan in the SQL Agent Jobs will shrink the log file.
Ours is large due to the number of transactions.

Data consistancy isnt always bad.
