I think the main reason is that the optimizer does not cache the execution plans for SQL in sp_execute, where as SQL executed directly are cached.

the dtproperties table contains the diagrams. I believe you get the DT_ stored procedures once you create diagrams. The SP's are required to draw the diagrams.

i logged this "feature" as a bug... Hopefully it will be fixed by SQL Server 2005. It won't be fixed in SQLServer 2000. This went on undetected for a while...
