Before failing over can you confirm that you see the following in Management Studio:

Principal Server: DatabaseName (Principal, Synchronizing)

Mirror Server: DatabaseName (Mirror, Synchronized / Restoring...)

If the above is not the case,...

Are the following services running on the SQL Server?

SQL Server

SQL Browser

When connecting, are you specifying localhost, machine name, IP address or a ' . '

Can you ping the 'local...

The specific 'Data/Log files Autogrow/AutoShrink Events' seem to be gathered from the default trace.
