be easier..give : select ID from TBL with col1=@a..

It would be better if u had created a composite index on those columns as it would increase your performance.

we tried in sql server 2000 Enterprise Edition

 but it just mentioned the version and when it was built but not the service pack.

Is there any other way other than that..
