The plug-in is not required to access AS 2005 from excel...
It's just another way to access your data.

I use the excel add-in to connect to my AS 2005 cube.
Maybe you are missing MSMXL V6

As far as front-end goes, I did have a look at a few tools that claim to be compliant to AS2005 but only two of them deliver a true BI...

Just for your information, The current version of PowerPlay is not compliant to AS2005 database. Actually, the entire Cognos product line is not compatible with SQL Server 2005 components.

If you want to deploy the Adventure work sample, just open the solution C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Tools\Samples\AdventureWorks Analysis Services Project\Enterprise\Adventure Works.sln
and deploy
