I understand that using filegroups are the correct method but it is a propriety system that we have no control over.

That's what I found as well. The only way is a new file with it's own filegroup and specify the filegroup when creating the index.

I suggest you do not have your backup in a separate group. Add the Z drive to your sql group so that when SQL server fails over the backup drive...
