I've only looked at both from a review perspective and the Quest product gets my vote hands down. Interface is far richer. Just my opinion.

Are you able to ping this server by name, i.e. ping YourServerName? If this worked well in the past and it is not able to resolve the server name today,...

Do you have the backup set to INIT? If not then you are appending to that backup file and thereby your file size would continue to grow.

Assuming the two files you recovered are fine, that should work.
Note, you are missing comma's after line 2 and 3.

Did you use the same "(convert(varchar(10), DateCreated, 101))" in the group by clause as well? This should work. Let me know if it doesn't.
