Yes, running xp_cmdshell will run external apps.
Is there something specific that you are trying to do?

SyBase/PowerSoft InfoMaker may be worth a look. Not too expensive and has a few good tricks up its sleave. Especially the latest version.

As far as I am aware, standard edition only uses 2Gb max. Enterprise ed. will handle more.

I have since found a solution mind you:
From SP2 onwards, the file: Instcat.sql needs to be applied manually, as per:
