It has been my experience that DBCC DBReindex definitely requires additional disk space.  If you have not reindexed the data previously be prepared to need almost twice as much disk...

For version 6.5 or earlier definitely run it daily before backups.  For versions 7.0 and 2000 weekly is within best practices prescribed by most any of the 'experts'.
