After installing client tools on XP Pro I find that I got various error messages
"The sql server is not known to be running. Are you sure you wish to connect?"
or
"sql server does not exist or access denied ConnectionOpen(connect())"
I used the wizard to select a server, but from then on it would not connect to it. I wonder if I need to configure anything in XP Pro first.
Any advice appreciated
Thanks

You might want to check the Client Configuration tools in SQL Server Folder.
Hope this Helps!!!!

Are you connecting to a local server or a remote server? What network protocol are you using?

Local server. Just installed XP Pro and then sql server 2000. Bear in mind I am a newbie at this as I am from an Access background.

You might take a look at the MDAC version. We had some problems with this between a server running one OS and the client on another.

I was advised to install the developer edition as apparently SQL Server Enterprise will not run on Win XP Pro.

Aha, you only installed the client tools? Then you need the database engine as well, and you are quite right about Enterprise Edition, you must use Devleoper Edition on XP Pro.
