I have just installed SQL 2005 x64 bit version on an x64 server that has 2 dual-core 2.8 CPUs and 4GB RAM, and the same db on a dual 1.4 (old, not dual core or HT) server with 3GB RAM and the x64 ver. takes 13 seconds longer to execute the same query. And the import of 1.2 million records also takes more time. Is there some fundamental setting that needs to be configured out of the box that is not required for 2000?
I did reindex after upgrading/moving the db to 2005.

is the I/O the same?
how are the drives and the files on them set up?

I found the problem, and now am seeing the same query execute in sub-second time. I tried rebuilding the indexes that were carried over from the SQL 2000 database and no change, then I updated the statistics, no change. So finally I deleted the indexes and recreated from scratch and that solved it.
The drive config is the same, same number, speed, capacity and RAID config. I have no idea why rebuilding the indexes did not work and recreating them did, but at least I see the performance gains as expected.
Thanks for your time and ideas.
