I am new to sql server, so please bear with me. I will see from time to time in sql books articles on how to backup sql server using t-sql scripts. I can't figure out where in the database to place these scripts. How does one go about this? Another example: I saw on the intenet yesterday a T-SQL script that can report back what version of SQL Server you are using. Where does one enter and run this script? Thx.

Hi,
You can use the sql server management studio. (Start->Run->sqlwb.exe). You get a connect dialog box asking the servername and your credentials. After supplying the necessary information and clicking on ok. Goto file and click on new query. A new query window opens and you can execute all your queries or t-sql scripts there.

Chandu's got you going in the right direction; If you downloaded SQL Express and installed it, you might not have SQL Server Management Studio. You'll want to download SQL Server Express with Advanced Services, which includes the "Express" version of SSMS.
Normal versions, like Developer,Standard and Enterprise would have installed SSMS as part of the Client Tools.
