Would that be a problem when I get a job?

  • Hi,

I don't know anything about SANs, and I have never seen such hardware. Would that be a problem when I get a job as DB Admin? can I solve it before getting a job?

  • It depends 🙂

It depends on the type of company hiring you. If they have their own storage administrators then your depth of SAN knowledge doesn't need to be that great. Just knowing the basics of what type of discs to request for your files is good enough.

If the company doesn't have a SAN administrator and you are expected to manage the SAN itself then you'll need quite a bit of detailed knowledge on that specific SAN product.

Minimally you'll need to know the different RAID types and understand dedicated spindles.

  • Thanks could you please suggest some studying materials :)?

  • Just search google for "RAID levels", "RAID Configurations", or "RAID Basics". There's tons of information out there on it.

  • I meant about SANs, do I have to read books about it?

  • try this

  • Yeah, Brent Ozar[/url] has a decent article on SAN basics and the different types of SAN storage. Check his 2nd SQL University link for SQL Storage related best practices on a SAN.
