Working In The US With SQL Server

  • I've been a SQL Server DBA in the UK for 5-6 years now, and one of my "pipe dreams" is to work in the US for a few years at some stage in the future... and I just wanted to hear from anyone who has done it, or from anyone who has any advice.

I guess that the best way is to get a job in the UK with a US company, and maybe get a transfer down the line - or work on getting expert/guru level knowledge, and then getting "recognised".

Apologies if this is of little interest to readers in North America!

  • Peter,

By far the easiest way would be to get a job with a large corporate in the UK and then do an internal transfer. I worked for a large corporate and saw several of my colleagues transfer to the US. Even with the backing of a large company it can still take months because you have to really satisfy immigration that you're not taking the job away from a similarly qualified resident. But that's where working for a multi-national helps - they've gone through the process before, they know what needs to be done and the people that need to be spoken to. In other words, they do a lot of the really hard administrative work for you. Also, when the time comes for the transfer you'll generally get a lot of assitance with relocation.

Aside from all of this, working for a multi-national generally means that you'll visit the head office occasionally and you'll strike up a relationship with your US counterparts. All of this means that if you do ever transfer you're already familiar with the people you'd be working with.

As for the other route, I'm really not sure. From what I've heard it's tough - but I can't really comment.

You could always join match.com, meet a lovely US girl, and marry her for the green card:hehe: But that wouldn't be fair would it, the US won't allow you to steal their jobs AND their girls as well.
