In workgroup edition, I'm using the maintenance cleanup task to delete backups older than 2 weeks. Each database has it's own folder where backups are stored. I have run the maintenance plan several times and the older backups DO NOT delete. I compared it to my other maintenance plan (that uses Enterprise edition) that has the same task. But just realized that the workgroup edition is missing the check box that says..."Include first-level subfolders". My workgroup edition does not have this option. I'm assuming that's why my old backups (that are in sub-folders) are not deleting. Is there an option in workgroup edition to delete these old backups in the subfolder. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

What version are you currently running on the Workgroup Edition? Is it SP2 or greater?

It's workgroup edition. NO service pack has been installed. Product level states "RTM"

Your problem is due to it being the RTM version. I am not sure which service pack included the option, but it was not included in the RTM version.
You need to upgrade to at least SP2 and I would recommend SP3 - as there were quite a few changes in SP2 for maintenance plans. If you chose to only go to SP2 - make sure you apply CU3 or later, as there were other problems with the base SP2 release related to maintenance plans.

Thank you so much for the info. Now, I'm thinking about upgrading to the Enterprise edition. Unfortunately I inherited THESE databases and there is no documentation what so ever. They don't even have the CD installation for workgroup edition. The think it was downloaded. 🙁 Have you heard of any problems upgrading workgroup to Enterprise edition?
I was going to back up all databases, install (or upgrade) to Enterprise edition and then restore all the databases.

I don't know whether or not you can upgrade from Workgroup to Enterprise. I guess you could try it and see what happens.
However, I don't think you really need to spend that kind of money. You should be able to upgrade to Standard with no problems, and it will be a lot less expensive.
Now, if you are migrating to an existing server with Enterprise already on it - and just installing a new instance that would be a different thing altogether.

Hmmm good point. We have standard edition. I'll try that first. I will be taking this ancient server and upgrading workgroup to standard edition.
