Hi
Have to buy a copy of SQL Server for an in house application.
Feature wise workgroup edition either 2005 or 2008 is fine.
However whenever I search to buy it - it shows as a 5xCAL version.
I get conflicting info on this - does this mean I can only have 5 concurrent connections? What if the app I'm migrating uses the same login, i.e. there maybe upto 15 users using it but the connection string used to connect uses the same SQL authenticated Login,
does this count as one CAL in use at a time?
In the future would it be possible to add extra licences to it.
Sorry but v.confused by the whole thing.

You can buy additional CALs so no problems there.
Not sure what Microsoft counts as one CAL use - have a rummage on their site for info about licensing, I'm sure it will be there somewhere.

If you have more than about 30 or 40 users (I forget the exact number) you'd probably be better off looking at processor licensing, which has no restrictions on number of connections. I assume you've checked that SQL Server Express isn't going to work for your application?
