Another thing I came across is...Make sure that you have a licensed software version and that it has been activated.
Still looking.....
Joe
Thanks. Just to assure everyone, I'm so honest about licensing that I squeak. And, yep, it's been activated.

Sorry - did not occur to me that I might be accusing you of shadyness. That was the farthest thing on my mind. Just trying to get to the bottom of this and hitting all posibilities..

Man, do I agree with THAT! Actually, I keep an old tried and true version of Office 97 running on the same box.

Good luck!

Thanks, Joe... It's not the same problem that I'm having but these things are sometimes related. so I'll check it out. The problem I'm having is that I frequently get the "Setting up Office" window and progress bar and it takes about 5 minutes to complete.

Jeff,
You ought to look at Win 7. I moved to the RTM this weekend, and so far things are working well. It flies on hardware and seems much improved to me.

Does SQL Server 2000 DevEd work on Win7?

You do not (per chance) also have Office 2003 installed do you. I know there are issues starting up some of the programs if you do - specifically Word.

Steve,
So would you recommend Win 7 over Win XP, Vista, or both?

I'm not typically an early adopter. I did Win 95, but held onto that until W2K was about a year old. I did go with XP right after RTM, but only because the admins at JD Edwards needed a couple things and they pushed us. I held off on Vista until I got a new laptop a year and a half ago and haven't really liked it. Too much overhead. The UAC thing actually is something I like, but overall it's slow. I put XP on the laptop, but had to go back to Vista because a couple drivers weren't being written for me.
Right now I have
- Win 7 x64, 8GB quad core desktop
- Vista x32, 4GB dual core laptop
- XP32, 4GB, AMD something or other desktop
- XP32, HP netbook
I really liked XP. It made me more productive and it just worked. However it's becoming a 64bit world, and the limitations of 32bit are more apparent all the time, especially as I've tried to go above 3GB to handle VMs. XP 64 had some issues, and honestly, at this point it's just too old. Limited support, and I don't know if anyone really worked through all the x64 issues. And don't have time to find out.
I have heard good things about Vista 64, and it's not a bad OS, except that it seems inefficient on hardware. It feels slow and bloated often, and that's an issue.
I've run Win 7 RC for about 2+ months, and it just worked well for the most part. It was quick, it had some nice UI enhancements, lots of drivers, it just seemed to work well. I had issues with Live Mesh and Acrobat reader, but the more I've talked with people, the more I think I had a bad download or install. I moved on Fri/Sat to the RTM and everything has worked. Office, SQL, Mesh, Live Writer, Adobe, they all installed well, the machine feels fast, and I'm happy with it.
Right now I'd recommend Win7 if you don't have any strange hardware. Check for drivers, but it seems that most things just work. I haven't added the optimized nVidia drivers yet, but things just work well for me now. I am hesitating on the netbook as I have an external video device that doesn't have Win7 drivers yet. But once they release, I'll move that. Once I test the video software on the desktop, I'll likely look to move the laptop to win7 as well.

Thanks Steve. Looks like I may have to test Win 7 as well.
