Windows 7 compatability

  • Hello all

We run a SQL 2000 based portfolio mgmt app. Our clients are all XP but will be replaced with new W7 pc's next year.

Will our app work with W7?

I'm very new to SQL but what is it that makes for incompatabilities (in apps) when new OS's come out? I thought MS made efforts to be backwards compatible.

I have a feeling that If i switch my servers to 2008 or whatever is latest /greatest , I will not be able to install sql 2000 at all?

    thx for your help

  • Are you running SQL 2000 on the XP clients? Or do they connect to a server?

If you are installing SQL Server 2000 on the client, as MSDE, no, AFAIK, you cannot install SQL 2000 on Win 7. There are issues with SQL 2000 on vista, so I'm sure it's not forward ported to 7.

There is an XP mode with some versions of CPUs. However, you could install SQL Express (2005 or 2008) and move your databases to that version in compatability mode 80.

  • Thx for replying

the xp clients connect to the win2003 server (sql 200 on the server)

  • No issues. The Win 7 clients can connect to a SQL 2000 db. The clients are backwards compatible. It's the server code that's the issue in trying to install that on Win 7

  • Thank you very much for the info

  • hello

I want to be clear on this.

I will have to install a sql 2000 client on each W7 pc

    so, will that install work?

or will W7 put up error messages?

  • Typically the drivers for SQL 2000 are on each Windows PC. The control panel has data sources and ODBC and OLEDB drivers should work for you. You should not need to necessarily install anything.

It depends on the app. My guess is you instlal the app and see if it can connect to the server.

  • hi

    ths for your reply

you are right, it's been a while since i install that app

i suppose the vendor would know best

    thx again
