I've been asked which version of Windows 2003 Enterprise Edition x64 to install for SQL Server 2005 Standard edition x64. There are two versions R2 and SP2. Which one should be used?
There are only a few differences identified at the comparison site: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/windowsserver/evaluate/features/compare.mspx
This server will only be as a database server for SQL Server 2005.
Does it matter which windows version is installed?

I believe that SP2 was also released for Windows Server 2003 R2 Enterprise x64 Edition. This is the version of the OS we are running for our Data Warehouse development servers, and it is at SP 2.
I have had no problems x64 version of R2. Our other 2003 servers are x32 bit and are not running R2, but they are stable also. I would probably go with R2 in you case, but couldn't give you any real specifics without knowing more details. I do know that R2 allows you to host upto 4 virtual servers on the same hardware using the same license as the host server.
