Using a Windows 2008 server (no domain) which has been 'hardened' for security. Followed the kb2000257 instructions to ensure installer's account has sufficient permissions as a local administrator, with the DVD in the local drive D:. Turned the firewall settings off so that the pre-check is all green. The preliminaries work just fine, unpacks the installer files (at least, two directories exist with lots of files in them).
Then everything comes to a halt. No intelligible diagnostics in any of the log files - everything seems to unpack fine, the only section with any doubtful feedback is the 'unmatched file size' message that is listed for InitializeMSiExtension portion of the log. Nothing that jumps out as an error message.
Log files are attached for your amusement. I'm suspecting either a damaged DVD (very low probability) or some 'hidden' setting I need to clear.
Any hints at all are greatly appreciated!

It turns out that, by UNINSTALLING the installer (and .NET for good measure), and then rerunning the installer, the installation got past the points where I was experiencing difficulties (other security settings were also relaxed in the interim).
