Another small contribution to the general concensus that "off-topic" editorials are a good thing. Personally the editorial is my favourite part of the site each morning - this may be in part a function of that fact that Mr. Jones' views often correspond with my own .
There is indeed more to life than work (or there should be) and a regular, gentle reminder of this fact can help maintain the balance we all need.
Thank you, Steve.

Off topic editorials keep the site interesting and hey what the heck I need a break from the mundane once in a while. But I do have a bone to pick... There was never a black and white Star Trek (copyright Paramount Pictures used without permision all copyrights are property of their respective holders etc.).

Steve,
Being one of the rare Colorado natives (and even rarer Seahawk fans - go figure), it's nice to read the editorials. I can see where someone outside the US might get lost. Soccer? Really? I would agree that too many people I meet in IT are devoid of personality when viewed by others outside the IT world. It's nice to take a break and read something that isn't IT related. I don't agree with everything you've written on but, as another poster put it, I also don't have to read it either.

Technically there was, the pilot was done in black and white ("The Cage"). Aside from that, given the time period, it is possible that Steve might not have had a colour tv and might have watched it in black and white.
Thanks,
Aleksei

True enough, I sit corrected. I did watch it in black and white actually, but it was broadcast in color (except for the black and white bits they cut out of the first pilot.)
In any case Steve, keep up the good work.

Three reasons why Steve should continue his off-topic editorials:
1) It proves to the world that database geeks like us actually do think in terms other than binary.
2) Off-topic editorials are entertaining, informative, and help break up monotony.
3) It's his site and he can write about anything he wants.
I enjoy the well-roundedness of the site, including some off topic conversation. Keep up the good work, Steve.

...I don't think so, unless some plastic surgery's been involved - though if I were Steve I'd just go along with it for some good fun...

Well you never know... after all, 'ol Sting started out as an English teacher. Hmmm, 'Former Rocker turned Developer' - come to think of it, I sit next to one here at work! He played in a local band for years prior to becoming a developer. Makes for a very interesting combination, not to mention fun!

Personally I really like the personal conversation style of Steve's articles. It is nice to be able to read up on the technicalities of SQL, then take a small break while hearing about what is going on in someone else's life before starting the workday.

Something I forgot to say in my last post. I don't get too many newsletters keeping me uptodate on the current technology and Steve often brings us choice morsels which I really enjoy hearing about.

Is this a tongue in cheek reference to another Steve Jones that played guitar for the Sex Pistols or are they really one and the same?

tongue is definitely in the cheek...go up 5 posts for similar confusion...

LOL, I do play guitar (badly), have dunked a basketball, and hit a hole in one, but I'm not a member of the Sex Pistols, haven't played professional basktetball or been a member of the PGA.
This was really a thread for actual complaints about the editorials, but I appreciate the positive comments and glad you like the editorials. I'll keep them coming, probably slightly more focused on technology than the last week, but I shall still range to other topics at times.

I am a humanoid too and don't mind reading an odd non-IT-related article, but why would one turn to a technical newsletter for this? Receiving a double-digit number of newsletter titles is expensive and I'd rather had them focused on their area of expertise. IMHO, non-IT-related editorials would look more in place in the editor's blog, perhaps with a link from the newsletter? In general, I do think Steve is doing a great job, I'll keep reading his newsletter in its current form.
