Why and How of being a SQL Saturday Volunteer

  • I think the only thing I would add is that it's absolutely ok to time box your volunteerism. If you want to volunteer the whole day that's terrific, but if you just want to do an hour or two, that's good too. Event leaders love all the help they can get, on whatever basis works for the volunteer. Being involved does change the experience, its the reason I look for ways to engage more volunteers, that shared sense of ownership.

  • Nice write-up. Having been to events as attendee, organizer, speaker, and volunteer, I totally agree that they are much more enjoyable if you are involved in some capacity.

  • Excellent advice. Thanks for the write-up.

  • Having served as a volunteer at the same event, I agree with all that you have said. But would add that the speaker's dinner the night before was the highlight for myself .. the chance to meet those that I respect and admire in a social setting makes all the work of the actual meeting seem trivial in retrospect.

If everything seems to be going well, you have obviously overlooked something.

  • Thanks for the note Ron; it was my understanding that we were very lucky as volunteers to get invited to the dinner and that generally the volunteers are not invited, so I left it off.
