Personally i'm still a little old school and I like to go and see all the blinky lights on a server.
But I have found that choosing an azure or AWS service can be very beneficial when dealing with sales engineers.. they have a reasonable idea of a monthly cost for any given service they are pushing to a client (and we can explain the limitations to them)
whereas if you have a server room, air-con, UPS, SAN, backup- generators etc etc, these costs are up front and there is no way to marry our hardware to the contract we offer the customer.
I do think some of the cloud services are way too expensive (managed instances) and some have very clear limitations (amazon RDS) but they do help us cost out projects with the sales teams, regardless of which tool you choose
