where to start business intelligence

  • Hi,

I want to learn Business Intelligence. Can anyone advise me on where to start ?

    Thanks,

    Sree

  • Guess that mostly depends on where you're at ? 😀

Business Intelligence is a rather wide field

As your post is in a SQL forum... See if you can get your hands on a book called "The Data-Warehousing Toolkit" by Ralph Kimball. this will give you a good background to the database methodologies used in BI.

small part in a big puzzle.

You'll still need to learn one or more of a myriad of front-end tools, techniques for data-mining, trend-analysis, reporting etc.

Your solution will ultimately need to be matched to your end-user's requirements, in order to provide them with accurate, on time information, that can be used to make business decisions or analyse trends.

Available tools for presenting information or transforming data range from free downloads to suites costing millions to implement.

I've been in BI for over 8 years, and am still learning....

My suggestion: read up a bit more on tools used in implementing BI systems, and decide for yourself which of these will fit in best with your current situation

  • If you want to learn about BI from a business perspective, I would recommend Successful Business Intelligence: Secrets to Making BI a Killer App.

If you are looking for something more technical, the following covers the full project life cycle and is specific to the Microsoft platform: The MicrosoftData Warehouse Toolkit.

  • Hi DanielG-259128 and wschampheleer,

Thank you for so much of info and advice 🙂

  • What role do you want to address? There are many, eh?

The late Dr. Cyril Brookes' writings are still available online, and are a wonderful collection of high-level thoughts on BI (Read: You won't learn how to create MDX queries):

What roles are in play for BI? The Data Warehouse Institute has an interesting categorization of them, mainly aligned with courses they offer:

After reviewing the above, there are many more resources to consider, based on the role(s) you are assuming.
