I want to begin working on certifictaions, but really don't know where I should start. I have never worked with a true sql dba or in a strict database environment. Everything I know has been self-taught and on the fly. I don't know if and when my department would upgrade to Sql Server 2005, so what version would you suggest I focus on truly gaining an in-depth knowledge and certification? Though I am not a DBA in the strict sense of the word, I want to operate more as a DBA and have the creditials to support what I know and do.

What are your current strengths? Are you a developer or a systems admin? ...or not sure which of those two you'd prefer to pursue?
If you aren't now already proficient in SQL Server 2000 DBA/Dev/support/etc., then go for the 2005 certs. The front door to both the DBA and Dev certs for 2005 is the MCTS:SQL Server 2005. You'll touch on plenty of aspects of both disciplines while digging into the knowledge required to pass that exam.

The MCTS cert is a "I am competant enough to work on the servers as an assistant DBA or junior developer" certification, designed to get your foot in the door.

I currently have to do both admin and developer duties, but rarely have the time to focus on either in my current position. I am going to look at the MCTS for Sql 2005. Thanks.
