Where are you?

  • La Porte Indiana; only an hour's drive away from Chicago for the best pizza in the country.

I work in Portage, right on the shoreline of Lake Michigan.

    No good deed goes unpunished.

Ray, no more arguments from me on this. I'll show you what I consider our best and if/when I get out your way, you can reciprocate. Still no private message (I wonder if I screwed something up - new computer - but I have received them in the past). I am going to open a temporary account and will post it for you to send your itinerary so we can meet.

Edit - I still have an older account hanging around (I thought inactivity would disable it). Send your info to tosscrosbysql@live.com Looking forward to meeting you and the missus!

-- You can't be late until you show up.

  • So, this talk of pizza on this thread has me thinking.

Whenever I travel, I make it a point to sample fare that's unique, indigenous, or original to that particular area (wings in Buffalo, Chicago-style pizza, crabs in Baltimore, coffee in Seattle, etc.).

So, here's a question: say I come out to visit your home turf. What do you suggest I try?

Here in upstate New York, off the top of my head, I'd suggest Buffalo-style wings, spiedies (marinated cubes of chicken), salt potatoes, and New York-style pizza.

  • Omaha....steak. I guess it's a mid-western thing, but Omaha has it's fair share of steak houses, but there's one in particular that puts a spin on traditional steaks. The Drover....their specialty is whiskey steaks and they are fantastic. It's been around omaha forever, but it's out of the way enough that most people still don't know what it is.

Besides that, we have several other small mom/pop places that are worthy of a visit.

  • Doesn't Omaha even have Omaha Steaks at the airport? I'm up the road a bit in Sioux Falls, SD, and can't really think of a state specialty. I even tried googling, but just got kuchen as our official state dessert. You could try a buffalo burger, where we aren't talking the spices but the real buffalo, at Fuddrucker's. I'm thinking South Dakota would be one of only a few states where the buffalo still roam.

  • Phoenix, AZ, born and raised NY, and lived all over the country at one point or another.

And... mmmm... pizza and steaks. Dammit, it's not lunch yet, thanks guys.

  • Yes, we have Omaha steaks...and in the airport too. Don't get me wrong, Omaha steaks has good steaks, but I don't think they can compete with an actual steak house in Omaha.

I just drove through Sioux Falls yesterday (and Friday). I went up to Miller, SD this weekend for a pheasant hunt with a bunch of good friends (business partners actually). I make it up there quite often for some business expansion on with some marketing projects that I'm working on outside of my day job.

Yes, they do. Right before you get to the security checkpoint. They also have a brick-n-mortar store down on L street, right by where the stockyards used to be.

The difference between Omaha Steaks and most of the local steakhouses, though, is Omaha Steaks ages their meat, which gives it a different flavor.
