When is a reporting task/project too big for Excel?

What does it depend on? Is it just so many things that it is impossible to categorize and generalize at all? When are you satisfied with Excel and when do you know you must reach for Analysis Services?

PowerPivot or simple Pivot....both are excel. Power is an enhancement that permits relating worksheets along key constraints (among other things).

Yes, there are so many factors to take into account that It Depends.

Type of data, volume, columns/types, desired usage for the output, complexity, level of user sophistication, corp committment ($/people/user training) to BI ...

We use cubes here and BI tools that offer a lot of flexibility to the users. I can safely say that there is no chance I'd use Excel here on this job. Each environment has its own boundaries, and within that, each project has its own unique requirements. This is why there isn't One Answer. It's really something that time and experience tell you.
