IIRC, they're based off the number of posts you've made on the site and other things. I think if you answer the QOTD correctly, those also add to the points. I think there's somewhere that breaks down the points -> title...

That particular thread is also no longer true. The "titles" for the higher levels has changed at least once since that post.

The points are for fun, I suppose. I got a chuckle out of an interviewer when I told him my points title on SSC. He asked me which forums I use.

I don't know if it helped. I got called back for a final interview. I didn't get the job. They chose a local candidate over me. I would have had to move. I didn't mind moving but they preferred to hire locally.
