Whats wrong with DISTINCT in this query?

    but you are selecting a lot of other fields

    What Steve has said there is the sum of it... DISTINCT operates on all of the fields you list, not just the one to come after the word. If ANY of those fields are text or binary type blobs... you can't use DISTINCT or GROUP BY in the query.
