Hi:
When we try to expand the tree inside the Enterprise Manager to work with an SQL server:
Enterprise Manager --> Microsoft SQL Servers --> SQL Server Groups --> (local)(Windows NT) ...
When we click on "(local)(Windows NT)" to expand this, there is a popup with the following error message:
-- Snap-in failed to initialize
-- Name: Meta Data Services
-- CLSID: { 12345677 .... }
I don't know what is this error message about. It is clearly that something wrong has happended to the SQL Server. If you know some idea about this and how to fix it, please help.
Thanks a lot.

I would reinstall the client tools, as you may have a corrupted file. Before you do that, you could try to start the MMC in author mode. To do that, make a copy of the EM shortcut, then add /a to the end of the TARGET. Mine looks like this:
C:\WINNT\system32\mmc.exe /s "C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\80\Tools\BINN\SQL Server Enterprise Manager.MSC" /a
Next, click on File | Add/Remove Snap-ins
Highlight Microsoft SQL Servers.
Click Remove
Click Add...
Scroll down to Microsoft SQL Enterprise Manager and highlight it.
Click Ok
Try and expand the tree as you did before.
If it works, click File | Save
Don't forget to remove the /a from the shortcut.
If it doesn't work, then the .msc file is probably corrupted, or you've got a registry problem. Either way, reinstalling the client tools is the way to go.

Hi mkeast:
Thank you very much for your help.
I tried as you specified in your comment and the problem exists. As you suggested, .msc file is probably corrupted and I need to reinstall the client tools.
In order to install the client tools, do I need to uninstall the client tools first or can I go ahead and reinstall the client tools from the MS SQL 2000 server CD.
Thanks a lot,
TN

I would uninstall the client tools first. Also, don't forget to follow up by installing SP4 (or whatever service pack level you are using on the server). You want to make sure the MDAC software is the same version.

Hi mkeast:
I tried to uninstall the client tools but I could not figure out how to do it: Control Panel --> Add or Remove programs
I looked into the list of the programs that appear there, I only find out Microsoft SQL Server 2000. How can I uninstall the client tools? Do I have to use the original SQL CD to do it.
Thanks,
TN

Hi, try this link
http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/tividd/td/BSM/SC32-9089-00/en_US/HTML/bsmi57.htm
You just need to reinstall the client tools, it will overwrite and fix the error for you
