What level of security does SQL 2005 require for "Adding Publishers" thru Rep Monitor

  • From my desktop client (SQL 2005), I Launch Replication Monitor.  When I attempt to "Add Publisher" (referencing a SQL Server 2000 Publisher) I receive error msg:

An error has occured while establishing a connection to the server.  When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server) (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 53)

All of our SQL Servers are 2000.  I am 'sa' across all SQL Servers.  I am NOT local admin on any of the servers.  Network Services restricts adding DBA's to 'Local Admin' on SQL Servers.  As a test, when Network Services adds us to the 'Power Users' group, I am able to "Add Publisher".  Unfortunately, Network Services also prohibits adding DBA's to any 'Power Users' groups on SQL Servers.

Network Services wants to know explicitly "what level" of security SQL Server 2005 requires for "Adding Publishers" other than "Local Admin" and "Power Users".

  • I wound up adding entries into my local HOSTS file (IP Addresses and matching Server Names).  I can now Launch Replication Monitor and "Add Publishers" !!
