what laptop do you use?

  • HP EliteBook 8540w

    Win 7 x64

    8 GB RAM

    120 GB SSD

My only gripe is that it is a bit heavy.

  • Lenovo T61. I agree with Gail about a separate numeric keypad. That would make life much easier.

  • HP HDX 18

P8400 Core 2 Duo, 4GB RAM, Vista Home Premium 64bit (runs SQL2k8 just fine).

Full HD 18" wide aspect ratio screen

    2 x ST9250827AS disks

BD burner (plays BD movies nicely).

Fullsize keyboard with separate numeric keypad - this was non-negotiable.

HP Smartmenu was pretty crap sometimes, it lost control of the volume, otherwise it's been a great little worker. Recommended.

HP Pavillion Wide-screen 15.4. It's an entertainment notebook, which for me means pretty good specs without too high a price. Runs SQL well, plays movies, runs games, just about anything I want to do with it. Plus, important consideration for me, a full keyboard with number pad.

Get yourself a 6-month investment banking contract in London, check the rates and availability on Jobserve (£500ish per day). You can have my 2-bed east-end flat (30 mins to City) for nothing, except dropping some of your awesome knowledge on London.

  • My idea is to get a Dell Latitude E6140

Do you mean model 6410 ? (transposed the 1 and 4)

I use a Dell 6510 Dual Core 4Gb RAM, which has a 15.6" screen instead of the 14.1" on the 6410. It weight 3/4 of a pound more, but worth not straining my eyes. Price was about $1000 in February.

I also connect to an external monitor and works fine on a 19" LCD but noticed flickers when connected to a 21".

  • Dell Latitude D620. I was issued it in Aug 2007 and it is still going strong.
