What is the max rows when exporting SQL 2008 R2 Reporting Services results to Excel

  • I'm having a problem running a subscription which attaches an EXCEL file in an email. From the ReportServer..ExecutionLog, it appears to be returning some 100,000 rows. I know Excel 2003 had a 65536 limit, although later versions of EXCEL exceed that number. Is there a maximum number of rows that can be exported into Excel from SQL 2008 R2 Reporting Services?

    Thanks

  • What is the problem you are having? Can you describe it a bit better or provide error messages? The max number of rows in Excel 2007 is 1 Million as per This link from MS.

I guess my biggest question is if you're dealing with 100,000 rows what are you doing with the final output? Perhaps SSRS isn't the best mechanism for getting this data to excel? Perhaps SSIS or BCP might be more efficient? Do you users actually use, view all 100,000 rows or do they just aggregate them down to something useful? IF that's the case why not jsut do the aggregations in SSRS and provide them a report that they'll be able to use straight away?

  • That's a good question, about what they're doing with the final output. I'll try to find out and see if another report is available or one needs to be created to better serve their purpose.

    Thanks!
