There's nothing basic about being a DBA... can you be a little more specific as to what you're looking for?

Great link for a "System DBA", Adam. What about an "Application DBA" or a "Hybrid"?

This book has probably given the best break down of different type's of DBA's that I've seen thus far. As we all know, every companies definition of a DBA is drastically different from one another. This book was a good eye opener to my former employer ... here is the chapter context (if anyone would like a specific section, I'll do my best to type it out later):
Types of DBA's
- Production DBA
- Development DBA
- Architect DBA
- ETL DBA
- OLAP DBA
Basic duties of A DBA
- Installation and configuration
- Security
- Operations
- Service Levels
- System Monitoring
- Performance Tuning
- Routine Maintenance
- Reliability
- Disaster Recovery
- Planning and Scheduling Downtime
- Capacity Planning
- Documentation
- Development and Desgin
- Scalability
- Replication
- Named Instances
DBA Tips, Guidlines, and Advice
- Know Your Operating System
- Help Desk
- Purchasing Input
- Know Your Versions
- Don't Panic

Get a good book on the subject at your local bookstore, Amazon, the library, whatever.
THE basic datum about being a DBA is that you'll be working with databases, and beyond that, it depends.
