What is a good SQL Server 2005 version to start with?

  • I have no experience as an SQL SErver 2005 DBA but I am a DBA for who's worked with Adabas & DB2. I have a friend who wants to computerize his company's operations. I have not seen the specs yet but will it make sense for him to start with developing a database in mind? If so should he consider SQL Server 2005 or SQL Server 2008? I only have experience with 2005 from my MCITP studies. If he could use 2005, which version of SQL Server 2005 should he start with? As I said I have not seen any system requirements yet so I am just generalizing that he start developing with a database in mind. Am I reasonable with this train of thought? Should he start with the standard version? The only thing I could say is that his company is not computerized yet.

  • Hi

There is not a great difference between SQL 2005 & SQL 2008. Since you have no previous experience on SQL Server it does not make a big difference whether you use SQL 2005 or SQL 2008. So i would suggest SQL 2008.

Without knowing the details it would be difficult to comment on this. Bear in mind that standard version does not have all the features.
