What Have You Learned Lately?

  • The skill that I am picking up at the moment (and one that I thought that I would NEVER do) is COBOL.

Sometimes I have to think twice about it before I believe it myself.

  • Thanks Steve, today I have thanks to you learned about PSR and I am definitely going to use it. Many times when you install software on a computer and run into an issuue, you know you have encountered this before but just cannot remember what is is that you did to counter it. With PSR I can now document it all.

  • Over the past year or so I've learned:

    -Python

    -Some basic statistics

-Analysing and developing algorithms (Big O notation and all that)

    -About a ton of T-SQL

Currently I've been making an effort to learn CROSS APPLY and tally tables. I've also signed up for the weekly DBA training Brent Ozar offers and I've signed up for Microsoft Virtual Academy which has some interesting courses on databases and SQL Server.

This doesn't count all the bits and bobs I've picked up here and there from forums here, PASS meetings and presentations (Koen did an awesome one on SSIS/BIDS a week or so ago) and SQL Saturday events (#347 DC this weekend. Woo-hoo!).

PSR is way cool - even works on a dual-monitor setup no sweat.

Sorry Steve but I almost didn't look into PSR (Problem Step Recorder) until manie's comment above. Sometimes I don't have time to look into each link.

  • Good statement here.

I never take my employment for granted, and it's one reason I try to continue to learn more about my craft, and build skills that might be in demand.

It's worthwhile to invest in your career. And if not for the career, I think learning new stuff can bring a nice refreshing feeling of accomplishment.

You are welcome and good luck.

  • That PSR thing looks great. Thanks very much.

  • Recently I have been doing a proof-of-concept implementation of Apache Kafka.

I am very impressed with it performance and simplicity.

  • I have also learned something else and I must say I enjoyed read it very much. It is about three persons that does excellent work. A bit fictional though but the persons are real. Maybe you will recognise who I am talking about. I also learnt through these stories quite a few database admin tricks. If I am a bit outdated then please don't laugh at me but I loved every single moment of it.

Not long ago, a crack team of SQL Server experts was flamed for a crime against database normalization they didn't commit. These men promptly escaped from the taunts of academic relational theorists. Today, they survive as website editors and software evangelists. If you have a problem, if no one else can help, and if you can find them, maybe you can hire the DBA Team.

  • I'm just enjoying learning more and more about SQL.

  • Good points Steve and thank you for this editorial, brought back some nice memories! Back in the "old" days I used to make a living mountaineering and climbing, first rule then was "never take anything for granted, look, listen and learn", kept me alive then and I guess it still does;-)

    😎

  • Learning F#

Also since both my development team and IT guys don't understand SQL Server, I'm forced to learn more than I want to know...

    :w00t:

  • I've learned to never look down but look up!!! Remain positive and full of enthusiasm no matter what comes your way!!:-D:-D:-D
