hi DBAs,
I'm a Oracle and SQL Server 2005 DBA for my employer. I have been asked to list some of the skills that a *Junior* DBA position would require.
Anyone care to throw out your ideas?
Thanks, John

Yep... it changes with every company... scan through the job descriptions at the following link:

Also, keep in mind that, sometimes, "Junior DBA" is like saying "Full Fledged DBA... at a lower pay rate." 😉

Many times this means "all those duties the Senior DBAs don't want to perform". If I were you I'd plan on a wide scope of work. After reviewing the previous link I would suggest you pose the question back to your employer to garner an idea what they interpret the position to be.

Personally, I'd start by making a list of all the duties that fall to your company's whole DBA team, then simply remove the ones you wouldn't think appropriate to leave for a junior DBA to do unaided.
My general opinion is that the only real definable difference in duties is that, in potentially awkward situations, a junior DBA is expected to ask questions to be on the safe side, whilst a senior DBA is expected to answer those questions (or research the answer) and take the responsibility if they get it wrong.
