What are my server needs?

  • Hi all,

I started working for a small engineering firm. He is looking to get his business using a server. His staff are not in a central location but usually on site. He would like a system with a central login that gives access to:

    -email data bases

    -Primavera P6 data bases

    -central files

This system should be able to handle up to 20 staff and *must* be secure.

Is SQL server right for this application? Will he need some combination of SQL and citrix or am I totally lost here?

Sorry for the ultra newb post but I'm a mechanical engineer and I'm way out of my league here.

    Thanks!

    Hi,

SQL server is a database server, ie a storage facility with associated language (SQL) to store and manipulate data in a (hopefully) meaningful way. So while SQL may be a valid choice to centralised data storage, it isn't a file or an application server.

From what you tell us, you will probably need a file/application/mail server. Connections to this server may be done via standard clients workstations (desktops/notebooks running standard OS) or thin clients through something like Citrix.

My advice: if you can afford it, get a consultant in to assess your needs and recommend an appropriate solution.

    Best wishes.

    Cheers

    Kind regards

  • After posting I did some more reading and found out that SQL is in fact a database server. I also found out that Microsoft SQL comes with the copy of P6 since it is designed to run off of a central database server (or several). Do you think something like Citrix Xenserver would have all of the features I would need? I'm assuming XenServer is a virtualization (remotely controlling another computer) and that no actual server hardware is needed. Or do you think something such as Windows SBS or Linux Redhat should be used. They seem to have all the features I would need but at a much higher cost.

Sorry for all the non SQL questions.

  • Hi,

I cannot, in all honesty to you, give you any advice since I do not have the first idea of your requirements.

As I said in my earlier post, you need to get someone in to assess your needs. A forum -and this one in particular, isn't the right platform to obtain appropriate answers to your questions.

    Kind regards
    Pierrick
