Western job markets?

  • We're considering moving to a more scenic location in the west (Boise, Portland, Colorado Springs, Spokane, Denver, Salt Lake City) in a couple of years but for various reasons we need to choose a general location before the end of this year. I need to know what the general job market is in each of those cities and find out some solid information on salaries (not the vague stuff that's on most public sites) and how broad the SQL Server related job opportunities are.

So what's the best way to pick a good recruiter? Other than a recruiter, what's the best way to find out what the job market is really like in various cities? I've already visited many job boards, but so many of the postings don't list salaries and we all know most jobs aren't posted publicly anyway.

    Any suggestions?

  • For Salt Lake City:

SQL Server DBA market in Salt Lake is only luke warm. Now if you are a .net programmer with some SQL experience I can point you to numerous positions and if you have biztalk experience I will gladly accept your resume.

Salaries as with most western states are lower. DBA's are in the 60-75K arena. But housing is much cheaper here. For 200K you get a 4 bedroom 2000 sq ft house.

The big employers here are typically Gov't - the University of Utah (where I work), State Govt ... but there are also lots of little guys around. In 1999 there were hundreds of dot coms and jobs where plentful, but that bust took out a lot of companies and left the market saturated with MCSE's that have brought salaries down (probably a good thing in the long run).

Good luck with your decision, I made the same one 5 yrs ago and moved from Arizona. Its much cooler here and the mtns are a 25 minute bike from my house.
