weird mdf file

  • I have a mdf and ldf file located in D:\MSSQL\DATA\database_data.mdf and D:\MSSQL\DATA\database_log.ldf. When I backup the database and try to restore it in another server when looking on the path where the mdf and ldf will be restored the names are change? D:\MSSQL\DATA\database.mdf. Is this a natural behavior? why did in the orig server the name is database_data.mdf and on the destination server it becomes database.mdf??

  • You can specify any name. If there is any format that you follow for mdf file names thn specify it in that format(under EM--Restore Database-->Options-->Restore As) while restoring.

    HTH!

  • Thanks for replying but my problem is not in modifying the mdf file name. When it is in the prod server file name is database_data.mdf but when I back up the db and restore it in another server (take note I dont edit the file name) name is changed to database.mdf. I just felt weird about this because for what I know without doing any modification database_data.mdf should still be database_data.mdf when restored to another server right?

  • It won't be same because by default it would be database.mdf, you can name it however ever you want. Don't worry about it, it is not worth. If you want in particular format create the database initially with what ever format you want mdf and ldf to be then restore.
