Weird CPU/Disk spikes

  • I see on Task Manager/CPU that sqlserver.exe goes from 3 to 25 and then back to 3... every second, this pattern is lasting days. Furthermore, I see on performance that the utilization of disk (data files) has the same spiking behavior. There is no much activity on the database and certainly the spikes happen even when nobody is connected to the server. We have Reporting/Analysis/Integration services up, I'm not sure if any of them has anything to do with this behavior. We recently migrated the database from sql 2000 (where we never had this problem) to sql 2005.

Version: SQL server 2005 Enterprise x64

    OS: windows 2003 Enterprise x64

    Storage: SAN

  • It happens for me, as well. It's the virus scanner and the SQL "heartbeat"... normally, the heartbeat shows up as a mere ripple... with a virus scanner turned on, it takes the virus scanner some work to let the heartbeat work.

RBAR is pronounced "ree-bar" and is a "Modenism" for Row-By-Agonizing-Row.
First step towards the paradigm shift of writing Set Based code:
________Stop thinking about what you want to do to a ROW... think, instead, of what you want to do to a COLUMN.

Change is inevitable... Change for the better is not.
