Web Based OLAP Client?

  • Morning All,

I am looking for a web-based OLAP client which could be used to browse a number of SSAS cubes which I have developed. Recently a number of users have asked whether it would be possible to browse the cubes on-line rather than using Excel as especially while working remotely this would be much quicker. Does anybody have experience of using JPivot or OpenI? I have played a little with JPivot but I find the interface itself is a little clunky!

If anybody has any experience of the clients I have mentioned or any other suggestions it would be much appreciated!

    Thanks in advance,

    Andy

  • You could use Cognos Analysis Studio, but I'm not really aware of the cost that comes with it.

(because you should also have Cognos Framework Manager and Cognos Connection).

It is web-based and it has some real good analytical capabilities for browsing OLAP data, but it comes with a learning curve.

  • You might want to take a look at that project http://ranetuilibraryolap.codeplex.com/[/url] and you could also take a look at what Dundas has to offer. They did have some OLAP items that you could use, but the last time I used them the support for SSAS 2005 and above was not there yet, hopefully that has changed.

My friend , check the link i posted....

It describes how you can set up SSAS so that you can use excel as a Olap web client tool

Instead connecting to SsasServer you connect to http://www.mysite.com/olap/msmdpump.dll

Indeed SOmetimes the answer is in fron of you

    Morning All,

I am looking for a web-based OLAP client which could be used to browse a number of SSAS cubes which I have developed. Recently a number of users have asked whether it would be possible to browse the cubes on-line rather than using Excel as especially while working remotely this would be much quicker.

I would suggest to look at our product.

As you may see on the picture below, it is working inside the browser. Technically speaking, this is a .NET user control which connects to the application server via HTTP protocol using the same connection as browser does (with the same proxy server, etc.). It makes fast rendering because this is a .NET code (but not DHTML), and also all transferred data from server to client and vice-versa is zip-compressed.

If to compare it with Excel, there are 2 groups of advantages:

    1) analytical: faster navigation, richer filtering/sorting/searching, time selection "from date A to date B", other ways of data analysis (not only chart and table)

    2) architectural: Enterprise version has application server with admin module where you will define users, define report templates, access for users to folders/reports, access to certain functions in the report module (when one user can do everything with a report, while other can just look), etc.

It can send reports by schedule, it can generate and send local .cub files by schedule as well.

On our site there is a trial version for Desktop edition which can be downloaded, but this is NOT what you need. In your case (to make it work through browser remotely, as described) you need Enterprise - so, please, fill in the request form, and we'll provide you with the installation.

  • Did you have a look at Stategy Companion?

Sorry for taking a while to come back to you, i've been working on other things. I'm not sure this product would be too suitable for us but thanks for the suggestion.

No I haven't - they aren't active in Europe by the looks of things. Do you use this package? I'd be interested to hear how you get on with it if you do!

Hmmm this looks like it might have some hope, I was hoping for something Java based however this looks worth investigating, thanks for the link!

  • Speaking under correction here, but I think Microsoft owns it so I think you will be able to get it in Europe. Some of our clients are using ProClarity and with Microsoft discontinuing the product, opted for migrating to Strategy Companion.

I use it normally for demo's to clients. One thing I love about it is the drag and drop functionality on a web front end.

Try and play with the demo online.

  • Hi Andy,

Strategy Companion Analyzer is a completely web based OLAP front end application designed specifically for SSAS cubes and takes advantage of SSAS features including perspectives, KPIs, measure groups, drill-through actions, etc... It is available in Enterprise, SaaS or OEM versions and has SharePoint integration options.

You can read more about Analyzer at http://www.strategycompanion.com. I would reccommend downloading an evaluation copy of Analyzer and trying it with your cubes. It is an easy install on an IIS server and will work with SQL Server 2005 or 2008. You can also schedule a demo. to see more functionality.

Let me know if you have any questions.

    Thanks,

    Eric

  • Hi Again,

Strategy Companion is a privately held company and has offices in the US, Europe and Asia. If you go to the company website http://www.strategycompanion.com and click on Company-Contact you can find the European contact information.

Let me know if you have questions.

    Thanks,

    Eric

  • Eric, I have a question. How much does the Analyzer cost?

I understand that this may seem incorrectly to ask (since my company - BIT Impulse - is a competitor), but I'll tell you why asking. I always persuaded 99% of my customers to trust .NET code more than DHTML (since in .NET we can guarrantee that memory is released, that rendering is faster, etc.).

But anyway, there are a few of customers who are asking for pure DHTML because they "pray" for zero-footprintness. Somebody has "driven a nail in their head" and they don't want to listen rational programmatic persuations and don't want to look at real tests of speed of work.

So, for such my potential customers I would be able to re-sell Analyzer (cause this is a really nice DHTML product) in the case if they'd like to buy it. With whom I can talk there about this?
