Way to compress SQL 2005 backups natively?

  • Hi,

i'm running SQL 2005 on a Server 2003 box. When I run a backup of my main DB the file is approx 60 gigs. If I zip it afterward, it compresses to 10 gigs. So I was wondering is there a way that I can natively compress my backups all the time? I know there are third party tools out there but I can only use what we have.

    Thanks,

  • Nope. Native Backup Compression is only available in SQL Server 2008 Enterprise Edition.

  • I'm a fan of setting the compression attribute on the backup directory..

  • Another option beside compressing the directory would be to use a third party tool, such as Red-Gate's SQL Backup. This includes support for backup compression.

  • The only issue is, when the tape backup is performed, the directory is uncompressed and re-compressed on the tape which makes tape backups take longer.

Server admin guys yell at me if I ever use windows compression!
