VSS service and SQl 2000

  • Didn't know where else to ask this question, so here goes:

"Microsoft® SQL Server™ 2005 provides support for creating snapshots from SQL Server data using Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS)."

Is the same true for sql 2000 or don't VSS and sql 2000 work well together.?

    TIA,

    Bill

  • SQL Server 2000 and below has no built-in integration with Visual SourceSafe. However, there are numerous 3rd party tools which do this. Take a look at the review on DBGhost, for instance:

Apex SQL Edit also provides similar capabilities:

I believe there are also some free tools or scripts that do similar things.

  • I think, this topic is about backing up databases (database files) with Volume Shadow Copy and SQL 2000 support, so why to talk about Visual SourceSafe ?

  • Because at the time of my post I had very little sleep and VSS usually equates to Visual SourceSafe in development environments. With that said, SQL Server 2005 supports database snapshotting, SQL Server 2000 and below do not. I don't know if Volume Shadow Copy itself can do the snapshot outside of SQL Server though, because I've not done any research on it.
