VMWare / VPC Cluster - 2-3 parts

    Anyone want to tackle building a cluster on virtual servers? I could use two tutorials here, one for VMWare, one for VPC, and if someone wants, one on VirtualBox.

    This would probably be a 2-3 part article. 1 for cluster setup, 1 for SQL clustering, maybe one for failover, add drives, something else.

    Does it matter which OS (Window Server 2003 or Window Server 2008)? I have not messed with clustering in Window Server 2008 but seems it is a big difference than setting up in 2003.

    Good question, I would lean towards W2K8, but if probably both would be good. Likely to be W2K3 for some time out there.

    I just put VirtualBox on my desktop last night and started building a VM (Window 2008 R2 Enterprise). I was not planning on clustering anything but can give it a whirl. I'm not sure if I have enough resources on my desktop to run more than one VM at a time. So let me see if I can get another one setup and running.

    If I can get 2 VMs running I can tackle the VirtualBox side, I'll let you know. If someone else already has something ready by all means jump ahead of me...

    I built a SQL2K8 cluster on VirtualBox last month, using Win2K3 and FreeNas for the storage.

    Could it be a suitable setup for an article?

    I just built a 3 node cluster with its own AD domain on VirtualBox last week..

    Windows 2008R2 Enterprise

    3 Cluster Nodes

    1 AD DC with MS iSCSI Target 3.3 software.

    Built one on VMWare workstation 5.5 about 3 years ago.

    I have been trying to get VMWare server to run stably on my machine and have had trouble. I also did basically the same thing as above with Windows 2008 Enterprise and the filer as Windows 2008R2 Standard running MS iSCSI Target 3.3.

    Like all things cluster for MS SQL shared storage was the only hitch I ran into.

    Virtual Box would be good, though I'd like articles with VPC and VMWare as well as guides.
