VLDB backup to network device(deduplication)

  • does 26 columns count? heh;-)

  • Hi

Can you give a breakdown of what % of your data is static.

If you are in a position of heaving some beast of hardware based on this,

1 - you mention that the restore time is not a problem.

2 - you say that you have some nice kit.

What I have done in the past is disable all the nonclustered indexes before backup. I did this on one of our servers the databases total only around 3TB .

The point of data is to recover and be operational. Our SLA was that we will have the DB back online ASAP with degradation of service (this allow for the index rebuilds if you recover from the backup)

So two items in this post.

1 - Filegroups, find out what part of your data is static and filegroup them so you don't have to backup the whole DB in one go.

2 - Remove nonclustered indexes if you have the throughput and SLA to rebuild once you are online in a DR situation.

    Cheers

    Jannie
