Vista SP1 install(be very carefull/Dont doit)

  • Vista sp1 installed overnight on my laptop which was running sql2005 analysis services etc with no problems.

After sp1 reboot the only service that will restart correctly is the browser service.

Event log is full of errors starting with this one as its attempting to bring up sql server

The server was unable to initialize encryption because of a problem with a security library. The security library may be missing. Verify that security.dll exists on the system.

  • good news,

the unistall of sp1 seemed to work and 3 hours later my sql services are now starting up correctly again.

unfortnualty this confirms that it is definatly the Vista SP1 install that is at fault here

  • Could you post the full Event IDs and related info for the errors you received?

  • Another 'interesting' to be aware of with the Vista SP1 install is disk space requirements.

The Readme says you need 6 GB free space on the system volume if you install from the .exe file. I had over 8 GB free but the install failed with error 0x080070070 which I eventually found was lack of disk space. I tracked this down to the system /Temp folder which was on another drive with only 1.8 GB free. Out of all the possible options I chose to re-try the install using Windows Update, which only needs 1.5 GB free space, which worked.

IMHO the reporting given by Vista SP1 is very poor. An end user should never be given a hex code as the error description. If the Vista people had followed the example of SQL 2005 SPs and CUs in designing the UI of the Vista SP1 install, I am sure there would be less problems in getting Vista upgraded. It is nice that the SQL authors have done SP installs so much better than the OS authors!

I don't have SQL installed on my Vista system, but wanted to get SP1 on to speed up file copy time to my network drive. Mark Russinovich has blogged about this, and now the Vista file copy is almost as fast as XP!
