Is there anyone out there who has virtualized a SQL 2008 production server? If so what challenges and or success' have you experienced with virtualizing it?
Thanks.

I have, didn't really have any challenges that were specific to Virtualisation as the server is presented in the same way as a physical server and the setup of SQL server was identical to setting up on a Physical server. So I guess that could be considerd a success

And your server is a production server? have you noticed any degradation in performance during peek times? How long have you been using your virtualized SQL server?
Thanks for the feedback!

1. yes.
2. no - I usally find performance problems are related to poorly built queries/tables rather than server type
3. about 18mnths

i am currently running SQL 2008 R2 Enterprise on a Virtual environment but not on a Prouction Host(s).
I have Copies of production Databases on my environment, the persomance is fine (may be due to the fact that no multiple connections or queries since its my test envoronment), But to my opinion SQL 2008 on a virtualized environment should not give you any problems if your virtual environment had been planned properly(by a VMWare Infrastructure Architect) for the SQL (in terms of resource allocation).
Obviusly ur VM Host server must be powerful enough. Otherwise as for the SQL Objects are resource intensive(by default they require some significant amount of memory).

Have been running Windows Server 2008 R2 64bit with SQL Server 2008 R2 64bit in a stand alone server and a seperate SQL Cluster in a production enviroment. Have had no issues. Just make sure you have enough memory and CPUs.
SQL Cluster R2 2008 64 Bit
2 nodes
4 CPUs per node
8 GB of RAM
SQL Standalone R2 64 bit
2 CPUs
8 GB of RAM
The SQL Cluster is replacing a Windows Server 2003 and SQL 2000 hardware cluster.
